I changed in the inside…

Dear Esther

by The Chinese Room

Yesterday and today I played a game I will never forget. It’s a game you feel in your very own sensibility.

Dear Esther is a very simple game which is more an interactive and entertaining experience.

The game focuses on the story of a man who lived a tragedy, losing everything important to him. You’ll live, following his voice and mastered metaphors, his journey to redemption.

I think it can not be easily compared to an usual game because it just looks more like a movie. You won’t really change the story by your choices, in fact you don’t choose anything. You simply walk.

It is the kind of game that needs to be prepared by shutting down all distractions and getting some great and loud headphones. Then you can enjoy the game.

Just focus on the narrator’s voice and live this history, feel all the sadness.

The only thing you can do in this game is walk. Yes this is it, walk. No jumps, no run, no action, nothing else than walking. I think it has been done this way so you were forced to listen and understand the plot. Because apart of this plot. This game has no sense and feels like a demo of beautiful

You’ll be amazed by the journey not only because of the visual appearance of the many places you’ll visit, but also by the ambience coming from the music and all the detailed sounds of wind or water. Moreover knowing it has been done using the Source Engine which is not a so powerful 3D engine is incredible, it’s obvious when you see a work of this quality that more than technical performance a very good art direction can blow your mind and eyes !

It almost feels like poetry.

Dear Esther is a contemplative piece of art.

For 7€, it seems like it’s a very fair deal compared to some poor games at 70€.

Also if you buy the game… Think about getting the soundtrack by Jessica Curry on iTunes. It’s worth the price !

Regexp for Supinfo

Hi guys !

This is a post for my classmates and all people studying at Supinfo. So let’s talk in french.

^(X-CALSTART|X-CALEND|CREATED|DTEND|DTSTAMP|DTSTART|LAST-MODIFIED):(\w*)Z(\s)$

Voilà have fun !

Easily create soft shadows for your UILabels

Hi everybody bonjour !

So I was wondering how I could do to make an UILabel cute in my UITableView headers.
I then decided that a soft shadow would be great to achieve this.

But oops. You can only make not blurred shadows with the shadow* properties from UILabel.

The trick here is to use Quartz 2D and the layer property of your UILabel (UIView subclasses gets it).

label.layer.shadowOpacity = 1.0; // Pretty self explanatory
label.layer.shadowRadius = 2.0; // Your softness :p
label.layer.shadowColor = [UIColor blackColor].CGColor; // Color of the shadow
label.layer.shadowOffset = CGSizeMake(0.0, 2.0); // Offset of the shadow

You could also use a UILabel subclass and CGContextSetShadowWithColor() but it’s way more complicated. (Well not really but we don’t care :P)

Also please note that this code is only compatible with iOS > 3.2.

See ya !

Motha’ focka DISC !?

Ohaithar !

Today I’m gonna talk about a game I recently discovered thanks to my friend @Vahire. It’s a fast paced retro styledarcade game that will drive you crazy… SUPER CRATE BOX !

Awesome music INCLUDED

Concept is fairly simple, you’re a little random character which only ability is to move, jump and more important SHOOT. Your mission, if you accept it, is to catch a maximum amount of boxes in the level. Simple ? Not sure !

There are a lot of enemies (big, little or ghost, those guys can be peaceful or angry) popping from the roof and they sure will try to get in your way.

Ahhh it's so peaceful&

Ok so you can actually move quickly shoot the enemies with your gun. But when you pickup a box, what happen ? Well your weapon change, and it’s the most important and more scarying about this game. You’ll say “Why ?”… My friend you can’t imagine the pain of the dual pistols… Or worse… The freakin’ disc gun !

You’ll certainly say that dual pistols are cool… But trust me, shitty firepower won’t get you out from some crap situations. Fairly cool is the disc gun ? WHAT ?! This shitty weapon will kill you like 95% of the time you’ll use it because the disc will bounce back in your head (I personnaly try to never shoot with it…).

Now… Why would you play it ? Hum my friend trust me it’s super addictive, moreover there are 3 levels with 3 difficulties. Each difficulty bring you to a newer level of nightmare. And sure Ambush will drive you crazy as hell, in this mode monsters can pop out EVERYWHERE.

Hell on earth ?

Moreover in each difficulty and level you can get unlocks by getting a certain amount of boxes and you want those unlocks (from laser gun to ninja character).

UNLOOOOOOCKS !

Oh I didn’t talk about the music in the game, each level has its own 8bit very cool soundtrack helping you to keep moving. You’ll love it. The Soundtrack is free and available on Super Crate Box website.

Music hell yeah !

So now go download it (IT’S FUCKING FREE !!) and enjoy the 0 crate game over in ambush mode DAMN…

(Oh did I mention it’s Mac Os X and Windows compatible ? YES THE DEVELOPER IS AMAZING)
